Ed C. Zurey, Jr.

Retired Captain Ed Zurey is a 31-year veteran of the US Navy, having served for most of his career on destroyers as a Surface Warfare Officer. He participated in Operations Desert Storm while off of Syria, Southern Watch from the North Arabian Gulf, Enduring Freedom in the Indian Ocean and Iraqi Freedom from Kuwait and while assigned to the Multi-National Forces-Iraq headquarters staff in Baghdad
Captain Edward C. Zurey, Jr., is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward C. Zurey of Fair Lawn, New Jersey. He was commissioned through the Navy ROTC Unit at the Pennsylvania State University in May 1978.
Initial sea duty tours have included assignment as Communications Officer and First Lieutenant onboard USS PETERSON (DD-969), Staff Communications Officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron TEN, Combat Systems Officer in USS CONOLLY (DD-979), and Executive Officer in USS DEYO (DD-989).
Subsequent sea tours include command of PETERSON while participating in counter narcotics-operations in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific and a NATO deployment with the Standing Naval Forces Atlantic to the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Captain Zurey turned over command in December 1997 in London, England and proceeded to the Northern Arabian Gulf to join the staff of Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group Two, embarked on USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73). He served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations participating in two lengthy augmentations to the Fifth Fleet staff in Bahrain in support of Operation Southern Watch. This was followed by assignment as Executive Officer of USS NASSAU (LHA-4). In November 2001, he assumed command of Afloat Prepositioning Ships Squadron FOUR operating in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
He detached from his last sea tour in command of Maritime Prepositioning Ship Squadron ONE, permanently forward deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, in July 2006 in Astakos, Greece.
Shore tours include assignment as a senior lecturer in the Physics Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; the Surface Ship Placement Branch Head (Pers-413) at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C.; as the Manpower Branch Head for the NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Transformation headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia and as the Professor of Naval Science at the University of Michigan. He also served a tour in Iraq as the Branch Head of the Political-Military section of the Multi-National Force – Iraq staff, headquartered in Baghdad.
He retired from the Navy in December 2008 with nearly 31 years of active service.
Captain Zurey is the recipient of a Master of Science degree in Physics from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California; a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College in Washington, D.C.; and a Master in Business Administration concentrating in Maritime Economics and Ports Management from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia.
Captain Zurey's personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (with three gold stars), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with two gold stars and oak leaf cluster), the Navy Commendation Medal (with two gold stars), the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign and service awards.
He is married to Linda Kelly of Bozeman, Montana and lives with their two Labs, Dillon and Boatswain, in Saline, Michigan.
